will there ever be a book?

lots of rain today on canada's west coast, so i spent some time working on line. came across this document / it was-is a 'book' proposal i had done a few years back (click to enlarge on blog). i think i'll revisit this idea. i'm sure there will be a flood of publishers pouncing on this.... please leave a number and my people will get back to your people..............

vancouver canada

i was downtown today, scouting photography locations for some friends. they are thinking of having a portrait shot in an alley. this is my take on a spot that caught my eye.

blast from the past

i don't really want to post family shots on this blog, but this one is kind of fun. the shot is of me, my sister, and twin brother, taken on our 2nd birthday. you can see a young gal in the background trying to crash the party. guess we were pretty popular with the ladies back in the day. (wonder what happened)?

vancouver canada

so, i had quite the journey today. spent 5hrs plus walking the town, camera at the ready. returned to home base, and reviewed 200 plus frames. and what do i do? post a shot of a door and a bus??

ok, this was what i was thinking. i flat out like the light/colors of the door shot, so that's that.. the bus... well, photographs of transit rides, are time capsules. that is to say, the streets, the buildings, will evolve slowly over time, but vehicles, and the advertising on them, suggest a moment in time. (just like the sunglasses worn in a 2 year old photo... dates you in an instant).

that's my justification for these 2 shots......... oh, and the exercise didn't hurt i suppose....

blog postcard

i'm having a mailer (postcard) printed to help promote my blog. i asked an art director friend of mine from Los Angeles if he would design something simple/contemporary. this is what he came up with and i like it. please let me know your thoughts. (i've posted the front and back of card). thxs

re run / retread saskatchewan canada

i was out shooting today (a very fine day no less), but it was all sea/sky, and boats. boring, i know. returned home and finally got around to entering a few images in a photo competition. (deadline at midnight). came across this shot . one of my favorites i produced last summer in SE Saskatchewan.
i posted this awhile back, so as clay the dentist would say... "it's a retread".

vancouver canada, olympic city

i'm thinking that some of you will be relieved that i didn't take yet, another shot of english bay. i set out on the north side of stanley park, and found a few locations.

the statue is called 'Girl in Wetsuit'. the plaque states "she represents vancouver's dependence on the sea". can't image how may photographs have been taken of this piece since it was installed in 1972. this is my version.

second shot is a small waterfall in stanley park. enjoy.

Caption Winner!

CONGRATULATIONS! to the grand prize winner of the first 'post your favorite photo caption'.

the esteemed panel of judges (me), had to go with JR's musing. but wow, there were so many funny and clever submissions.... now JR, as part of the contest rules, you have to take tommie d. for a beer, burger, and answer a skill testing question. then you get your favorite '8x10' photo from my blog, and then..... well..... you'll have to give tommie a ride home. you're living the charmed life of a winner my friend....

THIS IS THE WINNING CAPTION:

Beer, baggies and a love baton 'this big'
Kinky Tom describes his Valentine take down by the west ends 'love police' as - painfully satisfying.

boise lechner

i came across this portrait today. it's part of a series i shot awhile back, late 80's i believe. i posted one in the series a few months ago, but this is my favorite. i think this will bring a smile to all the people who knew boise.

bloom

i promised to take a few flower pictures for my mom. some of these are emerging from the soil, some are cut flowers on the sidewalk, at the flower store across the street. in any case, i thought some of my snowbound friends would appreciate the colours. PS/vancouver may get a bit of wet snow this eve if that helps.

boots on the ground

i've been living in dowwtown vancouver for the last 2 or 3 winters. plenty of development/construction. i have always noticed the hordes of construction workers, coming/going to their shifts ect. i want to, (and will),do a portrait series of this work force ( in the context of the city). / it seems univeral to me. they could be here, on the rigs, they could be miners, cowboys etc. they wear their gear like armore.

this is my first portrait / this guy reluctatly gave me a few minutes....that's univeral. stay tuned for more...

yaletown, vancouver canada

i found out today that friends of my sister/brother in law have a sailboat moored at the marina in yaletown. it was a lovely day, so i thought i would head over, and shoot them a photograph (i'm sucking up/hoping for a ride someday). i guess i got the 'postcard', but the second shot is how i really like to look at things. so, 2 variations of the location.

english bay, vancouver canada

i walk by this wounderful art on a regular basis. the sky caught my eye today, so i stayed around and took this photograph. i believe this sculpture is the bases for the winter olympic logo. i've added a bit of info from a winter olympic web site:

The logo and mascot of the future 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics is based on the Canadian Inuit inukshuk. The inukshuk is a stone marker that has been used by the Inuit to help guide through the northern Arctic terrain for centuries - see the Inuit Inukshuk article for background information. The Inuit inukshuk has also become a symbol of leadership, cooperation, friendship and the human spirit. This contemporary design of an inukshuk by Vancouver based Elena Rivera MacGregor and her team of designers was chosen from 1,600 entries from across Canada by an international panel of nine judges. The mascot will be named Ilanaaq which means ‘friend’ in the native Inuit Inuktitut language. Rivera MacGregor claims that her winning design represents the culture, environment and people of Canada.

post your own caption

this is my portrait of tommie d. the film guy. he was helping me shop for a little camcorder, and we stopped for a pop at the cambie hotel to take a load off. well, tom was spinning a few yarns..... i'd like to invite one and all to add your favorite caption to this photo.

maybe something like one of his friends from regina: > Lost in the details of his story, and just recently having come from his favourite bakery, Tom doesn't notice that his lunch guest left 5 minutes ago....

PS/notice the cops are on the way.

gastown

i've walked by this intersection many times / today the light co-operated, and i had fun composing this shot. i thought someone would want to know what building this is (i don't), so i asked my sage friend chris. "It is the Dominion Building. built in 1904, it is 14 floors".

english bay abstract

i'm aware i post many shots of english bay ( possibly, too many). in my defense, it's right around the block, and it's a sweet location. this is a different take on the bay / and, the ships are still out there.....

stanley park, vancouver bc

stanley park tree portrait.

downtown vancouver canada
