snowleaf

i went for a run this morn, and noticed the interesting contrast between the fallen leaves, and the melting snow (humm.. snow / a little too early for my taste). so i picked up the canon, and went for a walk. this is what i ended up with. reminds me of a simple elegant dessert / something i have yet to master.

i was doing some house cleaning due to the snowy weather, and came across my portrait of boise lechner. he was quite the character. this was shot at his farm south of oxbow in the late 80's, as part of a portrait series i was doing, fresh out of ryerson. around the same time, i was lucky enough to work on a project with writer W.P. Kinsella (field of dreams fellow). he had met boise, and i think they connected. i remember sending bill this shot a few years ago, and i know it brought back some fond memories for him. and it does the same for me.

i went down to radville this aft, to learn a little about canning beets (and raiding a garden). this is my portrait of scott and geeta, the instructors. it's always worth the drive. i hope i captured their spirit.

i was in the valley yesterday shooting for 'work'. i'm thinking that i don't want to post 'work' shots on this blog, but i like this one. this is costa, and his best friend, charlie. genuine upland hunters.

it kills me to post a 'winter' shot in the summer. however, this shot is in the 2009 edition of 'the canadian weather trivia calendar". no big whoop, but it's by that guy 'david phillips' of enviro canada. he's always on the telly and radio talking about the weather. i find him entertaining. my buddy steve m. hates this shot, but it keeps on winning awards. sorry steve..... don't be made at elegance..

portrait series / style

still trying to tweak my lighting technique for long awaited (for me anyways), portrait series. asked a friend of a friend to pose / i really like the first portrait. she took direction very well. i was looking for emotion (as ian described it). second image is to prove she has a nice smile. thanks brandi.

this is a portrait of a friend of mine that was a long time in coming. our families lived close by when we were growing up in small town saskatchewan. ever since i took to the camera, i thought robert would be a good study. i hope i've captured his spirit.

here are a couple more shots of odin. the people are very friendly down in that country. they do all the work, allow me to take a few photographs, and then insist i join them for a big supper and a few pops in the quonset (killer sweet potato pie btw). i'm planning on going back in the fall to shoot a series of portraits - if they'll have me.

i went down south for another round up. this is my portrait of odin. i was up on a hill away from the action when i heard one of the cowboys yelling for odin to bring him his spurs. i asked him if i could take a quick shot, and he obliged. one for the ages in my mind.

i revisited this shot that a took and posted last night as i found out this morn there was a tornado. it must have happened in darkness as i was there until last light. this photograph is on the outskirts of carlyle sk. i've pumped up the contrast to give a better sense of what i saw.
