east pender & main

had to return to the east pender & main area to shoot my version of the Ovaltine Hotel. i wanted to see the location under, what i consider, the right lighting conditions. i'm satisfied with my result. the neighbourhood is visually exciting/but challenging to photograph. a few of the locals gave me their vibe. all around.. no harm done.

note: i usually post one image ONLY. i wasn't sure which one was better? / comments?? (that is if you like). thxs.

I like the frontal version a lot, very cool shot.

i agree / i like it as well. the other shot puts the hotel more in context, but it's not as strong.

Definitely the first image.

Hey, Doug.

The first one does it for me. It's way cooler, more dynamic, with an interesting perspective ... definitely draws you in.

The second one looks like a typical shot you'd see in a city guide or something. It's just not you!

I enjoy when you post 2 versions with the "Which one do you like?" question. Really makes one think about what works and what doesn't, what's appealing and what isn't.

Thanks for the brain workout.

I seem to be in the minority but i prefer the second picture--seems more to-gether somehow.

I like the one on the angle. It makes it look "ultra groovy". Now how are those adjectives?? I also like the angled image because I like the white on the building -- it helps to set off the colored signs and yellow wall.

Ya, I like both images the second one because of the transit bus takes you there with the sights and sounds the first is a better shot of the hotel, ties the neon in.

I prefer the second picture because the first one says it is unkept. Maybe that is what you wished to portray? I wish you would not spend so much time in that east end area--could be dangerous . cat.

posted with permission/this is from an ad guy friend of mine from LA.

Hello my man,

You were right about time of day... very cool how the sky and neon lights work together... they are both really cool shots (didn't read the other comments... wanted to come at it fresh which is why I'm answering here instead of the blog).

I like the first one best... that low, upwards view really pulls the composition together so well... it just enhances every angle of the building and signs. And from the advertising point of view... that shot really makes me want to go in that place and get me some Ovaltine.

Best,
BB

I like the first one, because of the converging-ish upward lines. The second is like a Fred Herzog style which i also love. His way of candidly catching life as it was is amazing! -Adam Crysler
