so a guy walks into a greenhouse

ok, there is a little story behind these 2 images (i posted the cloud shot about 1 year ago).

i went to the greenhouse in carlyle sask. the other day to get some bedding plants (given my gardening skills, they may have been dealt a death blow). i was telling the owner how i liked the space etc., and she told me that they had to re build after the "storm" from last year. turns out, that cloud and her wind pals did a prairie reno about 10 minutes after i took the photo.

as luck would have it, the greenhouse had just finished a spring sale, and closed early. so no one was injured.

prairie storm

well, it was obvious that since i had just painted my deck......... some weather would come in. so i grabbed the canon and fired up the yaris/went to the high ground. this is the result. (a little weak technically but.......... you know..... what i see and how i see it).

prairie cowboy portrait

this is a portrait of a fella named gordie. i was working on a portfolio project for my company web site awhile back / we were experimenting with a technique called cross processing (not cross dressing / that comes later in the career).

as i recall, we shoot color neg., and process E6, or shot trannie, and processed C41. anyways, some one out there will correct me, i'm sure. ( i had a staff back then). and so, in spite of photoshop.... pros have always done something for effect / mostly in the darkroom, and with matte knifes, or dye transfers , inks etc. etc.

for those that may not have seen my web site, click here. i'm getting geared up for a re-do / any suggestions??

i came across this cover shot i did for tourism saskatchewan awhile back. the fun part of this job was meeting the cowboys. i will be heading out their way in a month or so to photograph a round up. i shot a couple last year, and it is quite the adventure. my favorite shot was a portrait of Odin, which you can see by scrolling to the bottom of this blog.

prairie town

i understand that kipling saskatchewan is having a birthday this year / 100 years, so i'm posting my official town portrait (it's not a red clip, but at least a red truck). kipling has a few stories / one of them below.. from wikipedia.

On 12 July 2006, Kyle MacDonald made his final trade with the town of Kipling, Saskatchewan after a successful series of trades from one red paperclip. The house is located on 503 Main Street. Kyle bartered the right to a role in a film to be produced by Corbin Bernsen called Donna on Demand for his house. Kyle and his girlfriend, Dominique Dupuis moved into Kipling around Labor Day, 2006. Open auditions for the movie role were held in Kipling, with Bernsen selecting 19-year-old local resident Nolan Hubbard for the role.

the greeting goes as follows: "at our age, inflation strikes more than the pocketbook! Happy Birthday".

yaris turns one

happy birthday to the roaming yaris / i shot this a year ago / one of my favorites. sask is big sky country. quite the canvas to my eye...

saskatchewan landscape / coming soon

i'm hoping this is what the lay of the land will look like soon.

i shot this awhile back as i was scouting for an assignment for adidas. the mist is actually a smudge a farmer had going for the horses. i like the effect.

vancouver music vibe 2

ok, the 'story' seemed more interesting yesterday than it does today, but here goes.

i met Marrett and his friends in stanley park while i was shooting video of their "drum circle". i guess of group of 10 or so souls get together on sundays to lay down the beat from their african drums, called djembes. Marrett noticed me filming, and asked if he could get a dvd of the shoot.

so we finally met up yesterday to pass along the disc, and he brought his animal pal, Othello (all 160 lbs of him). i immediately thought of a portrait of the 2 of them, with his drum, down on the beach. but i wanted to shoot it after sunset, using flash etc etc, so i thought i'd shoot it next fall (as i'm heading back to the prairies). Marrett was game, but then we thought, why not try something right now/might fluke out. so he hustled home and got his djembes, and i went for the canon. we met half way / i saw the bench and the tree shadow. 5 minutes later, i had my shot. it might be a winner. well........ i like it at least..........

eventually, i will post the drum circle video.

tourism saskatchewan

man.. this is a blast from the past. i came across this image i shot for tourism sask a few years back. for you photo folks, i shot 4x5 / B&W film, and i think we did the color on a quantel paintbox (i'm sure i have spelled that wrong). any ways, it was a fun project.

vancouver sun run 2009

the vancouver sunrun 2009 was today. i wanted to shoot video of the event. my film pal, tommie d., has a condo balcony with a first class view. i talked my way into the joint, and took this portrait of him as payback.

a bit about the run.... they say there were 55,000 folks participating. it's quite the spectacle. a 10-km race/walk. largest in the world. video to follow.

The Vancouver Sun Run, sponsored by The Vancouver Sun newspaper, is a 10-km race held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
