this is my portrait of a rodeo competitor from hardisty alberta. his name is keifer, and as it's noted on his belt buckle, he is/was the 'canadian international rodeo association' (cira), season leader last year / saddle bronc. (man, i hope i got all that info right / if not i'll take correction).
anyway.. i watched him hammer thru a few 8 sec rides, and altho i think he made the whistle on the last one, he got thrown over the fence. these guys just get up, dust off, and head to the next town. i'll do a documentary some day.....

There are many different kinds of courage and we would have to say this picture clearly illustrates a special kind, particularly with the story accompaning the picture.Very interesting. cw
i polled a few fiends before i posted this shot / one response below. thxs tommie d.
Hey Douglas,
Well since you asked....
The pix has plus's and minus's.
Firstly, the cowboy himself is great. Terrific 'look' about him.
Also, I like the black & white treatment for the subject matter.
Expression, pose, etc... all good.
The only downside I see is the location. The grassy field seems a tad incongruous to the subject.
Also, the horizon line being slightly off level is a tad odd to me.
Overall, the photo is very solid, with lots of plus's. I would not change a thing about the subject, just
the background and location holds it back from being a 'great photo'
That is of course, just my humble, and completely uninformed opinion.
Tom
thxs cw, the good ones can seem fearless... but in a humble way.
I think that I like that he wears a 'light' and 'dark' hat/clothing. It lends a bit of subjective inquiry to the photo. pm {I also love the b&w composition) light vs dark..
P.S. I think it is interesting that you only polled the 'fiends' about this photo....the 'fiends are an unruly bunch as you are well aware of!!
ps / i hear ya. i only polled the 'fiends' 'cause i couldn't spell caullegues.... err. i mean colleagues..
well, the comments on this pichure went kind of sideways. I think the cowboy kind of gets in the way of a half decent landscape. Honestly though since I have been a fan of your stuff since the seventies it reminds me of the photos you showed me when you were in high school. take that as praise, Doug
thank you / i'll take all the praise i can get (the delicate flower that i am).
funny thing, i hesitated to post this shot, wasn't sure it was up to snuff.
it's now one of my all time favorites......
